Leveling up: Drills

Finding time to Level Up can prove to be difficult sometimes. Especially when you have responsibilities to keep up with, such as a job, or school. Devoting yourself to becoming a competitive gamer isn’t an easy task. Honestly, it takes as much discipline as things like schoolwork; often times there are things to read up on, videos to watch, and above all, practice to do. Today I’m gonna drone on a little bit about how practice drills are key to making your overall execution better.

Now it doesn’t matter what kind of game it is that you play, if you want to be a top player, or if you want to put out the best time ever on a speedrun of a game, it’s going to take execution. It’s the same thing as a coach having you run suicides up and down a basketball court. Not only do they strengthen the body, but they also sharpen your execution, you’re practicing sprinting, and sharp turns.

Now say for example that you want to do a speedrun for Braid. If you have trouble running through a certain stage, the drill would be for you to repeatedly complete that stage, as fast as you can. Memorizing EXACTLY where to jump, EXACTLY when and how long to slow time, reverse time, etc. can all be sharpened by drills. It takes perseverance, and also a great deal of effort, but if you put the time in, you can take your game to the top!

It’s almost masochistic, isn’t it? I think for a lot of gamers forcing this kind of habit would sap a lot of the fun out of the hobby. It’s really something else, though, for the people who are out there winning tournaments and posting unbeatable scores and times…
